15th Oct Blog Action for WATER

Posted by BlogJunta on 10:26 AM 1 comments

As we had previously posted, Blog Action day, that is organized on 15th October and that is today. So get started, post your thoughts on this topic and link back to the Blog Action Day site.

Well, not sure what to write about? Not to worry, a recent mail from the organizing team saves the day. We would like to share the mail in its original format as a message from the organizing team.

Hey Blog Action Day bloggers,
We're one day away from Blog Action Day 2010. Tomorrow, on October 15th, thousands of bloggers from over 125 different countries will come together to write about water issues in their communities and around the world.
Don't worry if you don't yet know what to write about - we have you covered.
First, if you don’t want to focus on any specific aspect of the water crisis, we welcome you to simply write about Blog Action Day 2010 itself, telling your readers about this year's topic. You can also embed our video or action widget to educate and empower your readers.
For those of you who want to dig deeper into the often shocking, disheartening, yet hopeful issues around water, we've outlined a list of ideas for things to write about below.
The problem of scarce clean water:
Nearly 1 billion people lack access to clean water, which causes a litany of struggles, diseases and even death.
  • 40 Billion Hours: African women walk over 40 billion hours each year carrying cisterns weighing up to 18 kilograms to gather water, which is usually still not safe to drink. More Info »
  • 38,000 Children a Week: Every week, nearly 38,000 children under the age of 5 die from unsafe drinking water and unhygienic living conditions. More Info »
  • Wars Over Water: Many scholars attribute the conflict in Darfur at least in part to lack of access to water. A report commissioned by the UN found that in the 21st century, water scarcity will become one of the leading causes of conflict in Africa. More Info »
  • A Human Right: In July, to address the water crisis, the United Nations declared access to clean water and sanitation a human right over. But we are far from implementing solutions to secure basic access to safe drinking water. More Info »
Water over-consumption in industrialized countries:
While the developing world faces a water crisis, those in industrialized countries consume far more than their fair share.
  • Food Footprint: It takes 24 liters of water to produce one hamburger. That means it would take over 19.9 billion liters of water to make just one hamburger for every person in Europe. More Info »
  • Technology Footprint: The shiny new iPhone in your pocket requires half a liter of water to charge. That may not seem like much, but with over 80 million active iPhones in the world, that's 40 million liters to charge those alone. More Info »
  • Fashion Footprint: That cotton t-shirt you're wearing right now took 1,514 liters of water to produce, and your jeans required an extra 6,813 liters. More Info »
  • Bottled Water Footprint: The US, Mexico and China lead the world in bottled water consumption, with people in the US drinking an average of 200 bottles of water per person each year. Over 17 million barrels of oil are needed to manufacture those water bottles, 86 percent of which will never be recycled. More Info »
Water and the environment:
The disregard for water resources in industrialized countries impacts more than humans – it causes environmental devastation.
  • Waste Overflow: Every day, 2 million tons of human waste are disposed of in water sources. This not only negatively impacts the environment but also harms the health of surrounding communities. More Info »
  • Polluted Oceans: Death and disease caused by polluted coastal waters costs the global economy $12.8 billion a year. More Info »
  • Uninhabitable Rivers: Today, 40% of America's rivers and 46% of America's lakes are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life. More Info »
Water solutions:
The good news is that there are great organizations working on solutions and new tools that empower people to do their part to address the water crisis.
  • Building Wells: Organizations like Water.org and charity: water are leading the charge in bringing fresh water to communities in the developing world.
  • Technology for Good: Do you want to measure how much water it took to make your favorite foods? There's an app for that. More Info »
  • Conservation Starts at Home: The average person uses 465 liters of water per day. Find out how much you use and challenge your readers to do that same. More Info »
  • Keeping Rivers Clean: We can all take small steps to help keep pollution out of our rivers and streams, like correctly disposing of household wastes. More Info »
  • Drop the Bottle: Communities around the world are taking steps to reduce water bottle waste by eliminating bottled water.More Info »
Still not sure what to write about? Reply to this email and we'll be sure to help you come up with an awesome post idea.
Tomorrow is going to be a truly inspiring day of action, as bloggers from around the world will join the global conversation about an issue that rarely gets the attention it deserves. We are very excited that you'll be joining us and can't wait to read your blog posts.
Thank you for all that you do,
Maria & the Blog Action Day team

Video support an aspect of new wordpress for iOS

Posted by BlogJunta on 2:39 AM 0 comments

WordPress for iPhone and iPad has reached version 2.6, and it brings several very interesting improvements.
Most importantly, you can now record, upload, attach and play videos within the application. As video becomes an increasingly important part of blogging, this functionality will be invaluable for bloggers on the move.
The new version also brings autosaving, meaning that you won’t lose your entire post if something goes afoul. The setup process for adding new sites to the application has been simplified, and media management has been improved – it’s now nearly as good as the functionality in the web app.
Finally, WordPress 2.6 for iOS brings a lot of bug fixes and performance tweaks; you can check out the details about those on the official changelog.
You can install WordPress 2.6 for iOS from the iTunesapp store.

Blogrolling in its last days?

Posted by BlogJunta on 9:57 PM 0 comments

Blogrolling in its lasts days??

Blogrolling.com shot to fame with its innovative and easy techniques that provided bloggers with an elegant way to list and manage their favorite site without having to dive into the HTML of your site.

It has become so famous that bloggers blogroll one another almost everyday without even knowing where the term comes from.
Having been into business for almost 6 years starting in 2004, Blogrolling.com is on its deathbed and if rumours are to be believed, they will announce there permanent outage shortly.

A tweet from blogrolling to Darnell Clayton set the the rumourmills churning. It was as below
@Darnell We’ll likely make a decision next week and give people as much time as we can. A few weeks for sure. (via @Blogrolling)

While Blogrolling is no longer needed in the new age of blogging that we live in, the company did help persuade blog platforms to develop a better way to list blog rolls (with Google creating the most innovative way to list them upon ones site).
Unless you are of the viewpoint that blog rolls are worthless, users currently utilizing the service would be wise to find a way to export their links elsewhere or (better yet) hard link the sites within their respective sidebars.
